Moral Outrage is dedicated to the reform of
statutory rape laws. As they currently exist, statutory rape laws undermine the rights of both minors and adults while costing the taxpayer thousands of dollars every year in the prosecution of senseless sex crimes. We hope to address these and other age of consent issues. Got questions? Please see the FAQ or try the forums.

The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday reversed a sexual assault conviction against a 28-year-old schoolteacher who had a romantic relationship with one of her former students.
In a 5-2 decision, the court said the teacher, Melissa Lee Chase, should have been allowed to present a defense that the 16-year-old student consented to the sexual relationship.
Under Georgia law, the age of consent is 16, Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears wrote. “Generally speaking, it is not a crime in Georgia to have physical sexual contact with a willing participant who is 16 years of age or older.” -- By Bill Rankin
Sixteen years of age is too young for sexual consent because teens are not psychologically mature enough to give informed consent. Teens do not adequately appreciate the ramifications and consequences of having sex at such an early age. The age of consent should be the national age of majority, 18 years of age.
In a free society, there will always be limitations and restrictions on individuals, usually based upon their ability to do harm to themselves or others.
One of the most basic responsibilities of society is to protect the young and the infirm. However, as a society we must always balance such restrictions against the need to preserve the individual's freedom and dignity --By Kelsey Watchman

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is drafting a proposal for a much-needed update of Michigan's age-of-consent law. The revision is designed to protect Michigan teens who have engaged in consensual sex from unnecessary prosecution.
When Worthy's proposal arrives in Lansing, it should be taken seriously. All it takes is one overzealous prosecutor to change a kid's fortunes forever. Minors under the age of 17 cannot consent to have sex in Michigan. But what about when there are two minors involved? Or when a high school senior is dating a junior? --By The Detroit News

In the wake of the Parliamentary motion that took a first step to lowering the age of consent for male gay sex to 16 the Gibraltar Women’s Association has said the age should have been raised and equalised at 18 for all.
The GWA said it accepts Gibraltar’s international obligations to equalise the age of consent for sex for all genders but is disappointed that this should be set at 16 and not at 18.
“We do not allow our 16 and 17 year old children to obtain a full driving licence, vote, sit on a jury or register on the housing list. We do not allow our 16 or 17 year old children to gamble or watch certificate 18 films because of their violent or sexual nature,” it said adding that if as responsible adults we do not think they are mature enough to do any of the above, “why should we not only allow them but encourage them to enter into sexual relationships of any sort. The vast majority of them are not emotionally, mentally and in the case of becoming parents, financially prepared to do so.” -- By the Gibraltar Chronicle

Time.com lists
the "Crimes of the Century, the top 25": "On the 75th
anniversary of the Lindbergh kidnapping, TIME looks back at the
notorious crimes of the past hundred years." Mary Letourneau's
love affair with Vili Fualaau ranks as number 22, not quite as
"notorious" as the Lindbergh Kidnapping, the Black Dahlia,
Richard Speck, Tate Murders, Son of Sam, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy,
Jeffrey Dahmer, O.J. Simpson, the Unabomber, JonBenet Ramsey, Versace
Killings, and a few others, but more "notorious" than
Columbine and "The Scream" and myriads of other heinous
crimes involving murder, mass murder, serial murder, violent rape,
abduction, torture, mutilation, and cannibalism not included in the
"top 25."
And this in a country in
which, during the past 50 years to say nothing of the last century,
almost a million people have been murdered, millions and millions of
women and girls have been raped, and tens of millions of people have
been the victims of not only rape and murder but aggravated assaults,
shootings, stabbings, beatings, muggings, armed robberies,
car-jackings, home invasions, etc. Approximately 90-95% of such
crimes have been committed by stereotypical criminals, overwhelmingly
young males in their teens and twenties.

The Scottish Government has backed off on plans to legalise oral sex for under-16s but critics are concerned that other sexual activity, like groping, will be allowed.
Under current plans to overhaul Scotland’s age of consent laws, measures contained in the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Bill would legalise masturbation or groping by one child on another for children as young as 13.
The Scottish Government had originally proposed to legalise all sexual activity short of full sexual intercourse for 13 to 15-year-olds. --The Christian Institute

Wyoming County District Attorney George Skumanick Jr. cannot charge three teenage girls who appeared in photographs seminude traded by classmates last year, a judge ruled Monday.
U.S. District Judge James M. Munley granted a request by the American Civil Liberties Union to temporarily stop Mr. Skumanick from filing felony charges against the Tunkhannock Area School District students.
“We’re grateful the judge recognized that prosecuting these girls ... raises serious constitutional issues,” ACLU attorney Witold J. Walczak said. --By Erin L. Nissley

The Vermont Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously rejected a bill Friday that would have made it legal for 13 and 14-year-olds to give consent for sexual activity with individuals younger than 19.
The bill, proposed by Sen. Hinda Miller (D-Chittenden) and Sen. Jeanette White (D-Putney), would have amended the existing "Romeo and Juliet" law that allows 15-year-olds to give consent to persons younger than 19. Otherwise, the age of consent for sexual relations is 16.
"We have to deal with the world the way it is," Miller said in arguing for the bill. "Not the way we want it to be." --By Michael Henrich
